A recent HBR blog piece makes a convincing case that criticism of ideas in meetings results in much better outcomes than just saying yes to a leaders or a subcommittee chair. In fact, this point is so important that I would go even further: only by accepting — in fact catalyzing — criticism and and breadth of opinion and thought can a leaders really embrace diversity of opinion, geography, culture, ethnicity, age and experience.
We put so much effort into creating a diverse workforce, openly touting the benefits of diversity, both within our companies and publicly. It’s time to recognize that listening with a diverse and patient ear is what it ultimately really takes to walk our talk!
